Nutty Bed Races!

Looks like the White Squirrel Festival just got nuttier! Somewhere around noon on Saturday, May 29th, there will be the first "Nutty" bed race down Main Street. The details are quickly forming, but it looks like there will be four to eight person teams and someone has to be on the bed. There will be prizes for first to cross the finish line and for "Nuttiest" look.

If you have an old bed with wheels, now's the time to deck it out, fine tune it and get it ready for the wackiest races this side of the Blue Ridges.

Yes, so I've been wondering where did the white squirrels come from? I've heard rumors of a circus. ALso are they really albino or simply white? It would be great to have a story of how the white squirrel came to brevard on the festival web page. Thanks

That's a great idea actually. The short version is that they supposedly fell off a circus truck in Florida and were taken in. These folks then brought them or gave them to some folks here in Brevard. That was in the 1950's. One of the pair got loose, so the owners let the other one go as well. Within a few years, white squirrels started popping up around town. They now make up 25% of the town's population. And no, they are not albinos. These have regular eyse. It's supposed to be some kind of genetic variation where the white chest hairs of a gray squirrel and the dark gray body hair of a gray squirrel got reversed. That's why most of these white squirrels have a think stripe of dark gray down their spine. The chest hair and body hair got flipped flopped. That's according to our resident Biologist who studies them here in town. I'll see about getting the "official" story on the WhiteSquirrelFestival.com web site. It has the actual people's names that brought them here and all that good stuff. Hope this helps.
